\nBabies in agony.
\nMother’s with no power to protect.
\nMen in protective gear at war
\nwith the most vulnerable among us.<\/p>\n
Is it only two thousand eighteen years ago
\nthat a baby threatened an empire?
\nThat children were slaughtered in the name of fear?
\nAre we really going to do this again?
\nand again?
\nand again?
\nand again?<\/p>\n
This is who we are:
\nWe are Herod
\nWe are Rome
\nWe are \u00a0empire perpetrating itself
\non the backs of the powerless
\nwhose only sin is hope.<\/p>\n
We are no longer a shining city on a hill.
\nWe are soldiers following orders
\nmarching again to Nuremberg<\/p>\n
If there is any redemption
\nwe will find it in the tent cities
\nwhere children have no place to lay their heads
\nwe will find it in the desert
\nwhere families are fleeing violence and oppression
\nwe will only find it where others\u00a0refuse to look.<\/p>\n
And if we do not find the Sacred in
\nthe weary travelers at our border
\nmay we, like Herod
\nbe overthrown by our arrogance.<\/p>\n
