It prays on my mind that ordinary Germans allowed a man like Hitler to rise to power.
\nEven taking into account the economic depression that hit Germany, how could they let a man like him take power?<\/p>\n

Now I know.
\nFirst, some are seduced because their fears are played to:
\nfear of people of other races and nationalities
\nfear for their safely
\nfear for their economic future
\nfear of change<\/p>\n

Then the fears
\nnormalize hate
\nnormalize misinformation
\nnormalize our worst impulses<\/p>\n

Trump has played all those cards.
\nLike the master grifter he is,
\nwho many thought was just an act,
\nthat he would rise to
\nthe “occasion of the Presidency”<\/p>\n

He rose, alright.
\nLike Hitler on Krystallnacht
\nHe plays to people’s fear
\nto deconstruct the government
\nto violate the rule of law
\nto turn us against one another
\nfor his own benefit.<\/p>\n

He is tearing apart our nation
\nso that we feel divided from one another
\nHe is tearing apart our global relationships
\ndisconnecting us from the many who share
\nour democratic values<\/p>\n

He despises freedom.
\nof the press
\nof the people to protest
\nand as he rises he is attempting to devalue
\nboth the press and the people.<\/p>\n

He is carved from the same stone
\nas Hitler
\nand too many of us are blind to this rise,
\nto the possibility of a holocaust beyond our imagining,
\nsomehow feeling safer to normalize
\nthan to challenge.<\/p>\n

This is Trump’s rise to power
\nand we are letting it happen
\nIf there is a history left to record,
