I sat in the courtroom for over six hours listening.
\nVisualizing.
\nImagining.
\nCrying.
\nClinching my fists.<\/p>\n

Once again in \u00a0awe of our system of laws.
\nOnce again fearful of people failing them.
\nFailing us.<\/p>\n

I cannot fathom any sane reason
\nan unarmed, naked,
\nclearly disturbed man
\nshould be shot in the chest
\nthree times.<\/p>\n

Three times.
\nYou couldn’t figure out any other way?<\/p>\n

This man.
\nThis veteran of Afghanistan.
\nThis gentleman.
\nTraumatized by combat
\ndeserved better than that.<\/p>\n

You didn’t know that
\nhe was a veteran
\nwell-liked
\ncongenial
\nI get that.<\/p>\n

But you didn’t ask
\ndidn’t get follow up information
\ndidn’t consider
\nthat you might not have enough information
\nto make a good decision.<\/p>\n

Though how can it ever be
\na good decision
\nto kill an unarmed, naked man
\npoint blank?<\/p>\n

Surely it was apparent
\nhe was struggling with
\nmental illness.
\nClear as day
\nas the nose on your face.<\/p>\n

Was your judgment colored
\nby his blackness?
\nDid the hue of his skin
\ngive you permission
\nto use deadly force?<\/p>\n

The defense council
\nhelped us to see the perpetrator
\nas human
\nAs you should have been able to\u00a0see Mr. Hill
\nas human.<\/p>\n

We await the verdict
\nthat will allow
\nor disallow
\nprosecution.<\/p>\n

In the mean time,
\njoin me
\ncall his name
\nand pray for justice.
\nAdd his name to the endless list
\nof black men dying at the hands
\nof white officers.
\nRemember this man,
\ngrieve this man,
\nwho\u00a0did not deserve to die.<\/p>\n
