Let us celebrate those who are our ‘firsts’.<\/p>\n

I posted about the sculpture of Shirley Chisholm
\nto be \u00a0placed in Brooklyn\u00a0by the state of New York.
\nThe first African-American woman in congress.
\nThe first African-American woman to run for President.
\nI remember those days and the times.
\nI remember the joy and the power that surged through me
\nsinging a holy “Yes!”<\/p>\n

So I posted today about the sculpture
\nand a facebook friend said, “Finally.”
\nThat ‘finally’ tasted like bitterness
\nand judgment
\nand dismissal.
\nThose things I understand. I truly do.<\/p>\n

But perhaps ‘Yes’ serves us better.
\nHow much more important is it for us to remember
\nthe Yes of her life
\nthe Yes of her witness
\nthe Yes of a first to break barriers and
\nmove the arc closer to justice
\nthan it had ever been.<\/p>\n

Even Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt,
\nnever made it to the promised land.
\nHe only glimpsed it.
\nHis ‘Yes’ was passing through the waters
\nHIs “Yes” was making a way out of no way
\nHIs ‘Yes” was trusting Godde’s dream of the future.
\nHis view from the mountain top
\ndoes not diminish his ‘Yes’
\nIt invites us to our ‘Yeses’<\/p>\n

Today I am grateful for Shirley Chisholm and all her ‘Yeses’
\nHow amazing that the State of New York
\nrecognizes her life and witness.
\nToday I am going to be glad for all her ‘Yeses’
\nand grateful that the state celebrates the holy Yes of her life.<\/p>\n

Should we focus on Moses’ inability to reach the promised land?
\nOr Shirley not becoming president?
\nLet us never diminish the ‘Yes’ of any life.
\nThe Yes of persisting
\nthe Yes that challenges the injustice of every no
\nthe Yes of dreaming justice into existence
\nthe Yes that invites all the ‘Yeses’
\nof \u00a0those\u00a0who are to come.<\/p>\n
