I truly do.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps &#8216;Yes&#8217; serves us better.<br \/>\nHow much more important is it for us to remember<br \/>\nthe Yes of her life<br \/>\nthe Yes of her witness<br \/>\nthe Yes of a first to break barriers and<br \/>\nmove the arc closer to justice<br \/>\nthan it had ever been.<\/p>\n<p>Even Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt,<br \/>\nnever made it to the promised land.<br \/>\nHe only glimpsed it.<br \/>\nHis &#8216;Yes&#8217; was passing through the waters<br \/>\nHIs &#8220;Yes&#8221; was making a way out of no way<br \/>\nHIs &#8216;Yes&#8221; was trusting Godde&#8217;s dream of the future.<br \/>\nHis view from the mountain top<br \/>\ndoes not diminish his &#8216;Yes&#8217;<br \/>\nIt invites us to our &#8216;Yeses&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Today I am grateful for Shirley Chisholm and all her &#8216;Yeses&#8217;<br \/>\nHow amazing that the State of New York<br \/>\nrecognizes her life and witness.<br \/>\nToday I am going to be glad for all her &#8216;Yeses&#8217;<br \/>\nand grateful that the state celebrates the holy Yes of her life.<\/p>\n<p>Should we focus on Moses&#8217; inability to reach the promised land?<br \/>\nOr Shirley not becoming president?<br \/>\nLet us never diminish the &#8216;Yes&#8217; of any life.<br \/>\nThe Yes of persisting<br \/>\nthe Yes that challenges the injustice of every no<br \/>\nthe Yes of dreaming justice into existence<br \/>\nthe Yes that invites all the &#8216;Yeses&#8217;<br \/>\nof \u00a0those\u00a0who are to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let us celebrate those who are our &#8216;firsts&#8217;.
