{"id":1660,"date":"2021-08-18T11:46:49","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T15:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/connietuttle.com\/blog\/?p=1660"},"modified":"2021-08-19T07:51:40","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T11:51:40","slug":"living-with-uncertainty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/connietuttle.com\/blog\/living-with-uncertainty\/","title":{"rendered":"Living with Uncertainty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/connietuttle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/woman-on-road-sad.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-550\" src=\"http:\/\/connietuttle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/woman-on-road-sad.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a quote, I believe from an Episcopal confession of sin, \u00a0that says &#8220;We are self-deceived and strangers to the truth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I like to be certain.<br \/>\nIt comforts me.<br \/>\nNumbs me<br \/>\nto \u00a0ever-changing\u00a0realities.<br \/>\nBut we all seek certainty\u00a0at times<br \/>\nbecause the world is so large<br \/>\npeople are so unpredictable<br \/>\npolitics are so complex.<br \/>\nAt their best<br \/>\nreligions wrestle with questions<br \/>\nwhose answers are beyond our imagining.<br \/>\nAt their worst,<br \/>\nthey offer false and concrete<br \/>\ncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time,<br \/>\nmost of us,<br \/>\nwalk in the world content<br \/>\nwith the &#8216;knowing&#8217; we have<br \/>\nhowever incomplete<br \/>\nhowever unchallenged<br \/>\nWe ground ourselves<br \/>\nin the rhythms of<br \/>\nwaking and sleeping<br \/>\nworking and playing<br \/>\nconnecting and disconnecting.<br \/>\nUntil the times<br \/>\nwhen our unknowing<br \/>\noverwhelms us<br \/>\nand we realize<br \/>\nthat we are strangers to the truth<br \/>\nand maybe even<br \/>\nself deceived.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change.<br \/>\nPolitical turmoil<br \/>\nin a land\u00a0that once\u00a0felt knowable.<br \/>\nThe fall of nations to terror,<br \/>\nthe subjugation of women<br \/>\nthrough sexual violence<br \/>\nthe rise of authoritarianism,<br \/>\nrampant disease,<br \/>\neconomic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Confronted with\u00a0our ignorance,<br \/>\nthat what once we thought<br \/>\nmay no longer be true,<br \/>\nthat what once we believed<br \/>\nhas shown itself false,<br \/>\nwe combat our fear,<br \/>\nby clinging<br \/>\nto what we think we know<br \/>\nbecause\u00a0certainty<br \/>\nis our last refuge.<\/p>\n<p>So let us pursue<br \/>\nsomething other than<br \/>\nthe numbness of &#8216;certainty&#8217;.<br \/>\nThe challenges of our time offer<br \/>\nboth despair<br \/>\nand hope.<br \/>\nDeath and life.<br \/>\nWhen we are confronted<br \/>\nby ambiguity<br \/>\nlet us\u00a0choose hope<br \/>\nand let us choose life.<br \/>\nNot because we know<br \/>\nany damn thing<br \/>\nbut because<br \/>\nwe are willing to risk trust.<\/p>\n<p>This is where<br \/>\nfaith and certainty\u00a0collide.<br \/>\nChoose the path of trust<br \/>\nnot because we are convinced<br \/>\nof some immutable truth<br \/>\nbut because we choose<br \/>\nknowledge beyond facts<br \/>\nrelationship beyond comprehension<br \/>\nand the wild goodness of the Sacred.<\/p>\n<p>The writer of the book of Deuteronomy said, \u00a0&#8220;I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.
